Tottenham host Doncaster Rovers on Wednesday night in the third round of the Carabao Cup, and it could be a special moment for youngster Luca Williams-Barnett.
Spurs welcome League One outfit Doncaster to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in midweek for the EFL Cup tie.
For Spurs boss Thomas Frank, he will be hoping to consolidate a strong start to the season with a deep run in the domestic cup. It definitely feels like the North London club are already taking a step in the right direction under the new management, but picking up silverware will be a huge area where he’s judged.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler thinks Spurs have a deep squad to select from, so let’s wait and see if there will be wholesale changes to the starting line-up for Wednesday’s cup fixture.

Thomas Frank hints at Tottenham debut for Luca Williams-Barnett
The noise coming out of Spurs is that Luca Williams-Barnett, 16, could be in line to make his senior debut for the club.
Williams-Barnett has been spotted training with the first team ahead of the Doncaster cup tie. The attacking midfielder has been shining for the Spurs Under-21s side this season, so he could now be rewarded with a promotion.
In his pre-match press conference, Frank hinted that the teenage talent could be used against Doncaster.
When discussing Spurs youngster Williams-Barnett, Frank said via The Evening Standard: “Yeah, he’s a player that we like a lot. Let’s see tomorrow, but that could be an opportunity.”
“Of course he’s been trained with us, Luca, a few times and I get good info from the academy and from our transition coach, Stuart. So yeah, I’m well aware of Luca’s talent and I like what I see. He’s young, obviously, but his composure and technique and vision is very good.”
Williams-Barnett, who scored a hat-trick for the U21s on the weekend, is clearly someone to watch out for.
It is extremely encouraging to hear the English rising star has already impressed Frank. If he gets on the pitch against Doncaster for a first-team debut, it would be another huge vote of confidence.

Tottenham’s recent record in the EFL Cup
Even though Frank is trying to juggle the Premier League and Champions League right now, we would like to see them do well in the EFL Cup as well. On paper, they’ve got a decent first draw at home to League One opposition, but they must be aware of complacency or they risk an upset.
In recent years, Spurs have gone deep in this competition several times, but they just can’t quite get over the line.
| Season | Stage reached |
| 2024/25 | Semi-finals |
| 2023/24 | Second round |
| 2022/23 | Third round |
| 2021/22 | Semi-finals |
| 2020/21 | Final |
This current Spurs group ended the club’s trophy drought last season by clinching the Europa League, so they should go into cup competitions this term with real belief and ambition.
