Hotspur Way in Enfield has been Tottenham Hotspur’s state-of-the-art training ground since its opening in 2012. The site replaced the club’s previous base at Spurs Lodge after 16 years.

Tottenham chiefs oversaw a lengthy project to leave the Luxborough Lane facilities for a new training ground a few miles down the road. Work actually started on the club switching sites back in 2007 when Spurs secured a site at Bulls Cross and began building the new campus.

Today, Hotspur Way serves as the training ground for Tottenham’s first-team squad and their academy teams. It is also located around seven miles from their Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London. While Spurs have invested heavily in keeping its facilities to a high standard.

Tottenham Hotspur training ground name

Tottenham elected to name their training ground as Hotspur Way as they embraced another element of the club. The north Londoners had used their nickname for their previous base at Spurs Lodge. While Hotspur FC initially served as the club’s name before changing it in 1884.

Hotspur Way cost Tottenham £45m to build once the club finished all work on the training ground in 2012. Spurs moved into the site that summer and have access to numerous state-of-the-art pieces of equipment today. The club’s facilities also feature an attenuation pond.

The pond has established a wetland and an intermittent wetland habitat with natural plants and wildlife. It further serves a function by controlling the flow of water off-site. Tottenham designed their training ground with a focus on environmental protection and sustainability.

Building works for Hotspur Way saw Tottenham plant over 150 new and semi-mature trees along with thousands of plants, hedges and flowers. Spurs also restored the area’s historic hedgerows and field boundaries. These touches helped to enhance the ecological habitat.

Additionally, the artificial pitch’s ETFE roof utilises a similar material to the biodomes at the Eden Project in Cornwall. While more than 10% of the energy that Hotspur Way uses comes from renewable sources, including the photovoltaic array on the roof of the main building.

Tottenham’s players, meanwhile, have access to hydrotherapy and swimming pools at their Hotspur Way training ground. It further features state-of-the-art gyms plus medical facilities and classrooms for the club’s academy teams. There are also dining and rest areas on-site.

Further works carried out at Hotspur Way at a cost of £30m in 2017 saw Tottenham build a 45-room player hotel at their training ground. Mauricio Pochettino sought to have the extra site during his tenure as the club’s manager. Spurs finished work on their hotel during 2018.

Further works are also in the pipeline today. Enfield Council made Tottenham the preferred choice for a 25-year lease on half of Whitewebbs Park in 2022. Spurs intend to make part of the former golf course next to Hotspur Way a training hub for their women’s and girl’s sides.

Tottenham plan to build a state-of-the-art facility with a clubhouse and up to eight pitches, should they secure the lease. While The Sun reported in January 2023 that Spurs would pay Enfield Council an upfront fee of just £500,000 plus £75,000 per year throughout the lease.

Before they moved into the 77-acre Hotspur Way site, Tottenham used Spurs Lodge as their training ground for 16 years. Tony Blair also opened the site in Chigwell, Essex in September 1996. It marked Tottenham’s move from their long-time training ground at Brookfield Lane.

Cheshunt in Hertfordshire was home to Tottenham’s training ground for 44 years before the club relocated to Chigwell. Spurs bought an 11-acre site from Cheshunt FC back in 1952 for their training ground. It featured just three pitches, plus a small stadium for their academy.
