Tottenham’s poor Premier League record continued as they were defeated 4-3 by London rivals Chelsea.

A number of Spurs stars were off the pace against the Blues, with Pedro Porro earning criticism from the media, meanwhile, Yves Bissouma’s performance was labelled as ‘brain dead’ by Jamie Carragher.

Ange Postecoglou and his Spurs coaching staff will undoubtedly have a lot to reflect on after the defeat – and Ian Wright has highlighted one problem that might catch their attention.

Ian Wright reveals why Tottenham lost to Chelsea

Despite racing into an early 2-0 lead, Tottenham never seemed fully in control, with Chelsea’s comeback feeling inevitable.

That feeling has been echoed by Ian Wright, who has claimed it was only a ‘matter of time’ before Enzo Maresca’s side took the lead.

“In the end, Spurs just didn’t seem to have any build-up play to put Chelsea’s defence under pressure. Didn’t have the ball long enough. Chelsea had so much of the ball, and it was just going to be a matter of time,” Wright told Premier League Productions.

Wright has also previously criticised Tottenham’s inconsistency, which is yet another problem Postecoglou must consider moving forward.

Tottenham’s poor possession stats vs Chelsea

Like many managers, possession is one of the key factors of Postecoglou’s style of play – so the Aussie will be fuming at his side’s lack of control versus Chelsea.

The Lilywhites were outthought and outfought by the Blues, with the likes of Pape Matar Sarr and Bissouma struggling in the midfield battle – something that is shown by the stats.

No matter the opponent, Tottenham are not used to conceding possession, and it is something Postecoglou will undoubtedly want to fix as soon as possible.
