Brennan Johnson has been one of Tottenham’s star performers so far this campaign.

Now in his second season at the club, Johnson bagged his eighth goal of the campaign off the bench against Manchester City.

With goals against the likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Brighton – the 23-year-old is fast becoming one of Ange Postecoglou’s key men.

It has, however, not all been plain sailing for the Welshman, with Johnson having to delete his social media following abuse from fans back in September.

Since then, though, Johnson has proved his doubters wrong and really kicked on in Spurs shirt – pinpointing one moment as the turning point of his Tottenham career.

Receiving abuse from your own fans must be hard to take for any player, but the Welshman hasn’t let it affect him.

After deleting his social media in the aftermath of the North London derby, Johnson would go on a streak of scoring six goals in six games – the first of those being an injury-time winner against Coventry in the Carabao Cup.

Johnson has since reflected on that goal, telling Optus Sport it was a ‘really important’ moment in his Tottenham career

“I think when I got my first goal the team was in a bit of a tough spot and the way we won that game so late it kind of brought everyone together,”

“I think for me personally it was at that point after that game that gave me a bit of confidence and belief that I could do it. Since then, obviously it’s been a really good few months for me.

“So I’d say that first goal was really important for me and the team, it really did turn it around.”

Postecoglou-backed Johnson to return to form following the online abuse, and the 23-year-old has since well and truly repaid his manager’s faith.

Dejan Kulusevski thinks Johnson has been ‘unbelievable’ so far this season, and the Welshman has credited Postecoglou as one of the main reasons for his success.

“I think when I first signed it was all quite rushed, it was right at the end of the window, so we didn’t get loads of time to talk before I came, but since I’ve been here it’s been a really positive relationship,” Johnson said.

“I think there’s been times where I’m doing well and he keeps pushing me to do more. He never really thinks of the past, he always thinks about the next action. But also when things aren’t going well he’s very good.

“He gives a lot of praise for working hard, I think a lot of it can go under the radar, especially from outside. He’s good at making sure working hard for the team is rewarded.

“It’s little bits like that when the goals aren’t going in but you still feel like you’ve rewarded the team with your hard work.”
