Brennan Johnson was once again one of Tottenham’s standout performers as the Lilywhites ran riot against Manchester United.
A goal at Old Trafford makes it four goals in four games for the Welsh international. A run of form that would have seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago.
Defeat in the North London derby ultimately led to widespread criticism for several members of the Tottenham first-team squad, with Brennan Johnson taking the large brunt of it.
The Spurs winger would face mountains of online abuse from so-called ‘fans’, so much so that Johnson would deactivate his social media following the loss to Arsenal.
With criticism and abuse rife, the Welshman’s Spurs career was nearing boiling point, the 23-year-old, however, has since shut up his critics with a number of standout performances – the first of those being a last-gasp winner to rescue Tottenham from embarrassment against Coventry.
Having recently transformed his fortunes it begs the question as to how has he done it. Is it a lucky run of form or is Johnson finally blossoming into the star we all expected him to be?

Johnson has repaid the faith of Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou
In light of the online abuse suffered by the 23-year-old, Postecoglou publicly backed Johnson to prove the doubters wrong.
Many fans may have expected the Aussie to take the Welshman out of the limelight for the time being, but the Spurs boss has decided to do the total opposite, starting Johnson in every game since the Coventry fixture.
The Welshman’s last-minute winner in the Carabao Cup was followed by two well-taken finishes against Brentford and Qarabag, before most recently latching onto the end of Micky van de Ven’s ‘brilliant’ assist against Man United.
Having scored in every game since the Arsenal clash, Johnson has ultimately repaid the faith placed in him by his manager.
Johnson’s stats show a pretty picture for Tottenham supporters
One of the main criticisms often laid at Johnson’s door is his perceived lack of end product. This season however has shown the Welshman has improved in that regard.
For example, when it comes to shooting, Johnson has sometimes previously been slightly erratic in front of goal, stats from this campaign though tell us he is now providing more in that area.
| Stats per 90 (23/24) | Stats per 90 (24/25) |
| xG – 0.41 | xG – 0.47 |
| Shots – 2.05 | Shots – 3.79 |
| Shots on target – 0.81 | Shots on target – 1.26 |
Johnson has also been criticised at times for failing to beat his man, but the numbers suggest that is beginning to change.
| Stats per 90 (23/24) | Stats per 90 (24/25) |
| Dribble success rate – 39.1% | Dribble success rate – 50.0% |
| Touches in opposition box – 6.41 | Touches in opposition box – 10.96 |
| Dispossessed – 0.81 | Dispossessed – 0.84 |
The stats – albeit a small sample size – suggest that Johnson’s overall game is slowly improving which paints a bright picture for his future in N17.
