Tottenham have dodged very expensive bullet with January transfer almost certainly off the table now

Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank may feel a little bit disappointed when the January transfer window opens.

It is now very unlikely that Tottenham will be able to sign one attacker they are really keen on.

Spurs already strengthened their forward line in the previous transfer window, bringing in Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United and Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.

Following their 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers over the weekend, Vitor Pereira spoke positively about Kudus and Simons. The duo are top attackers, but it is clear that Tottenham still want another forward player.

Savinho not worth the money Tottenham would have had to pay for him

Despite landing Kudus and Simons, Tottenham were also interested in signing Manchester City star Savinho in the summer.

While they failed to convince City to sell to them, it had been reported that Tottenham were not giving up on Savinho.

However, the 21-year-old is now thought to be close to putting pen to paper on a new contract at the Etihad, which is likely to end any hope Spurs had of signing him in January.

It is a development that may disappoint Frank and the recruitment staff at Spurs, but it could end up being a blessing in disguise.

According to Brazilian outlet Globo, City rejected a €70m (£61m) bid for Savinho from the Europa League winners in August.

For all of the potential that Savinho possesses, he is not worth that kind of money, at least not yet. Last season, the winger only managed to score one goal in 29 Premier League appearances.

If Frank is looking for another attacker with experience in the English top flight, someone such as Brighton & Hove Albion’s Kaoru Mitoma would be less of a risk.

Savinho’s 2024/25 season stats in full

Savinho was certainly not a goal machine during the 2024/25 campaign, but he did manage to chip in with assists.

Still, you probably want a bit more than that from a forward who is going to cost over £60m. With Savinho not capable of offering much firepower in front of goal right now, Tottenham may have just dodged a bullet here.
