Sky Sports pundit critical of ‘rude’ Ange Postecoglou after Tottenham Hotspur defeat to Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou finds himself coming under fire after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the North London derby.

This has been a disappointing start to the season for Tottenham Hotspur.

Fans were looking for Ange Postecoglou to take the next step this season but Tottenham have won just once in the first four games.

Spurs dominated Leicester City for large parts but completely lost control in a 1-1 draw before beating Everton comfortable at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham then contrived to lose at Newcastle United despite dominating possession, before losing the North London derby to Arsenal.

Gabriel Magalhaes scored the only goal of the game as Tottenham once again conceded from a set piece against Arsenal.

Postecoglou brought fun and entertainment back to Tottenham last season but the second season needs to be a serious improvement – and we are not seeing it yet.

Sky Sports pundit slams Ange Postecoglou

Postecoglou now finds himself under rising pressure for the first time since arriving from Celtic last year.

The Australian is unlikely to be sacked any time soon but he is now facing intense questioning over his approach.

Fun and entertainment only gets you so far and Postecoglou must now prove that Tottenham can win the big games and really push towards major honours.

Postecoglou doesn’t seem too concerned though and was in somewhat bullish mood after Sunday’s defeat to Arsenal.

Postecoglou suggested that he doesn’t just usually win trophies in his second season at a club, he ‘always’ does.

‘Nothing has changed’ claims Postecoglou, who remains steadfast in his belief that Tottenham will win a trophy this season.

Pundits aren’t so convinced though and former England left back Stephen Warnock has offered his verdict.

Warnock has told Sky Sports that he thinks Postecoglou has now shifted the pressure onto his players and doubts that Tottenham can actually win a trophy.

Warnock added that Postecoglou is now ‘spiky’ and ‘rude’ in press conferences and isn’t impressed with what he is hearing from the Spurs boss.

“They’d best win against Coventry or he’ll be under pressure, because then he’s only really got one competition to win, hasn’t he? The FA Cup, and that becomes very difficult.

“It’s going to be tough for Tottenham to win anything, but it’s not without the realms of possibility. We know they’re a good team, we know that they’ve got players that are very capable of winning big games, so it is there for them, it is a possibility.

“But what he has now done is, he’s put immense pressure on his team to go out and win a trophy. Every time that they step into a cup competition now, all focus, all eyes are going to be on his team and it’s whether his team can deal with that pressure.

“He seems quite happy to be able to deal with it, but he’s just very spiky at the moment, isn’t he? I feel like, when he first came into the league, there was an element of… we all enjoyed his press conferences, we all enjoyed his nature of things.  There’s an element at the moment where, I’d like to say he’s a bit rude in the way that he acts. I don’t think it’s a great look, I’m not a massive fan of it if I’m honest,” he added.

Tottenham Hotspur’s best chance of a trophy

Tottenham fans have been waiting a long time for a trophy and can probably rule out the Premier League title even at this early stage.

Nobody really expected Spurs to mount a title charge this season but it’s one trophy to pretty much cross off the list.

So what next?

The Carabao Cup is first up and Tottenham have to negotiate a tricky trip to Coventry City on Wednesday night in order to advance.

Ultimately though, if Spurs have any hopes of winning a trophy, Championship opposition must be dealt with.

The FA Cup will come around in January and Postecoglou may need to take these games seriously and play his first-team stars rather than rotate.

Spurs also have the Europa League to deal with and a new format to work with as games against the likes of Rangers, Roma and Galatasaray loom.

Winning the Europa League is a tough ask but the last four winners are Villarreal, Eintracht Frankfurt, Sevilla and Atalanta.

If Tottenham can find some consistency in the final third, Postecoglou may well bring some European glory to Spurs – and he will certainly attack that competition given his firm belief in landing silverware this season.
