Tottenham Hotspur suffered defeat in the North London derby as they were once again unable to make their dominance count.

Gabriel Magalhaes’ header in the second half proved decisive in the derby as the Gunners recorded a third straight win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs managed to have the majority of possession and created numerous chances, however, they lacked a cutting edge in the final third to trouble the visitors.

After the defeat in the North London derby, Ange Postecoglou was questioned about whether his team are still capable of challenging for silverware.

Postecoglou’s bullish claim about Tottenham’s trophy chances

Postecoglou was in a bullish mood after the match as he hit back at a question doubting his ability to match his comments about delivering trophies in his second season.

Before the start of the campaign, the Australian coach told Sky Sports: “Usually in my second season I win things. That’s the whole idea.

“First year is about establishing principles and creating a foundation. Hopefully, the second year is going onto win things.”

Asked whether he still saw enough in his team to win silverware this year, Postecoglou told Sky Sports: “I will correct myself: I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing has changed.”

Postecoglou must take cup competitions seriously

Whilst this seems like quite an obvious statement, at Tottenham this most certainly hasn’t been the case for a long while. The North London club’s focus has always been on getting into the top four and cup competitions have just been brushed aside.

The Lilywhites kick off their EFL Cup campaign on September 18 away at Coventry and Postecoglou cannot afford to take the game lightly. Spurs were eliminated at the hands of Fulham last year as a heavily rotated lineup lost at Craven Cottage.

The Europa League will also provide Postecoglou with a great shot at silverware and is a competition Postecoglou must take seriously from the off.
