One of Thomas Frank’s first tasks as Spurs manager was to discipline midfielder Yves Bissouma for poor behaviour.
Yves Bissouma landed in hot water with his new manager after repeatedly showing up late to training. Thomas Frank set the tone by dropping him from the squad to face PSG in the UEFA Super Cup.
When the Premier League opening weekend came, Frank provided an update on the situation. He said Bissouma would be back in the squad and that the situation had been addressed.
The Mali international would pick up an injury, and hasn’t been involved since. But Frank was asked about the state of their relationship ahead of Spurs’ clash against Brighton, Bissouma’s old club.
Thomas Frank shares his feelings on Yves Bissouma
In his pre-match press conference, Frank’s last question was centered around his injured midfielder, with whom he had a rocky first couple of weeks.
Bissouma’s future at the club was in doubt during the final weeks of summer, but he was still a Spurs player when the window slammed shut.

Frank was asked for a fitness update, and he responded: “He’s just started to run a little bit outside. He’s not part of the group, but from everything I’ve seen, when I say hello to him and from the players, seems good. Focused.”
On whether Bissouma would be available before the next international break, he says: “That I actually don’t know. I’m going to say the players that I have available now is the players I have available. Of course I know, but that’s a little bit further down the line.”
That’s not really what fans are curious about, though. They want to know about the state of their relationship.
From Frank’s perspective: “There’s no hard feelings at all. Not before, not now. Train well, and everyone has an opportunity.”
Bissouma might struggle to break back in
It sounds like Bissouma will be welcomed back into the squad with open arms, but that doesn’t mean he’ll get back in favour.
The central midfield area is now stacked with talent. Joao Palhinha’s arrival is more competition for Bissouma, and Pape Matar Sarr and Lucas Bergvall have started the season in flying form.

It will take time for Bissouma to work his way back into contention, with no guarantee that he returns to his previous role.
Frank wants to move past this issue, but he will be wary of Bissouma. He was banned at the start of last season for more inappropriate behaviour.
You would imagine it’s three strikes and you’re out.
