Gabriel Agbonlahor has delivered his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s move for former Chelsea star Timo Werner.

Werner is set for his Tottenham medical this week and barring a late hiccup, he will join on an initial six-month loan deal.

Spurs will have the option to buy the RB Leipzig striker for a fee in the region of €15-20million over the summer, according to David Ornstein.

It’s a deal that has been nine years in the making from Tottenham’s point of view after previously showing interest in Werner during his time at Stuttgart back in 2015.

Of course, Werner made the switch to Chelsea in 2020 after an exceptional spell at Leipzig. The 27-year-old’s time at Stamford Bridge didn’t exactly go according to plan and he rejoined the Bundesliga outfit just two years later.

And Gabriel Agbonlahor is unconvinced by Tottenham’s move for Werner, labelling the German forward a ‘frustrating’ player.

Agbonlahor shares honest opinion on Tottenham signing Werner

Speaking on talkSPORT (6:53 pm, 06/01/24), Agbonlahor compared Werner to Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez.

“First of all, the reason why I am not sure is why for the second time are Leipzig happy to let him go,” the former Aston Villa skipper said. “There’s a reason why he has scored two goals in 14 games this season.

“Why are they letting him go halfway through the season? In the Premier League, he got 10 goals in 56 games. He is that frustrating player.

“You watch him, and he is like one day making the right runs, making the right finish, and the next game he will be erratic like Mudryk is, running out of play or making the wrong runs, he will run into someone, he will be one-on-one and miss a chance, a bit like he is not prolific. He reminds me a bit of Nunez when he finishes, not prolific.”

It’s certainly a move that has divided opinion amongst Tottenham fans, with some labelling it smart business while others feel the club have opted for the cheap signing.

Werner has struggled for starts at Leipzig this term and has netted just twice in 14 appearances in all competitions.

The German forward endured a difficult spell in England last time around with Chelsea, despite lifting a Champions League title in the process.

Despite his obvious weaknesses in front of goal, we feel this could be an astute move from Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou is lacking options up front at the moment, with Heung-Min Son away at the Asian Cup until February.

Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon are also sidelined and Werner is a player who is capable of operating across the frontline.
