Over the summer, rumours of a Cristian Romero exit wouldn’t go away, but were put to bed when he signed a four-year extension with Spurs.

Cristian Romero has been handed the armband after Son Heung-Min’s departure, and any notions of him leaving look dead in the water.

Spurs sorely missed the World Cup winner last season, unable to assemble a competent defence in his absence.

Romero has discussed the change at Spurs as they gear up for their return to the Champions League.

Thomas Frank’s arrival at the club couldn’t have come at a better time for Romero.

He has been very vocal about his desire for the club to compete at the highest level, and he enters the new season fully fit and bolstered by a plethora of exciting summer additions.

Ahead of Spurs’ first game of the league phase against Villarreal, Romero spoke to the media about the mood at Spurs under their new manager.

He said: “”I am very happy here, it is like a family. I like the manager. I like the way we work, the way we train.

“Always things can improve but I think everyone here at all levels are taking the right steps to improve. I am very happy here.”

As for the Atletico links, the Argentinian claims they were way off: “I never said I wanted to leave the club. Nothing came from me to that effect.”

It’s obvious that there were disagreements between Romero and the club, but the departures of manager Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy coincidentally coincide with a shift in attitude from Romero.

As he explained at Monday’s press conference: “Sometimes, things have been said that aren’t true as well, but always everything I said is because I want there to be a structure of a club that can be at the top level, as one of the big clubs.

“That’s why I was sometimes so angry before, but today I see a very, very organised club with a clear idea and a coach who is organising things. Everyone is seeing that in a short space of time.”

Spurs look far more competitive to start the season, and Romero feels as though his wishes have been granted.

A natural winner, he will want to build on the success of last season, and it sounds like the environment this season is more conducive to that goal.
