Why Tottenham decided against signing Eberechi Eze over the summer

Tottenham Hotspur ended up having a frustrating summer transfer window as they brought in just one player who has made an immediate impact on the team.

Dominic Solanke was just one of six summer signings who has made his mark on the team at Tottenham with the other five additions all long-term investments.

Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert look like good long-term prospects but have struggled to make their way into the team for now. Timo Werner and Yang Min-hyeok, who will join Spurs in January, were the other two additions.

The North London club’s supporters will be disappointed that Ange Postecoglou wasn’t given more tools over the summer to help improve the team with his Spurs side sitting 8th in the league.

Why Tottenham missed out on Eze, Gallagher and Neto

Tottenham could have signed Conor Gallagher and Eberechi Eze last summer but decided against moves for both players due to their wages, according to Paul O’Keefe.

Postecoglou was especially keen to sign Gallagher, however, the former Chelsea man ended up moving to Atletico Madrid instead. Gallagher was always going to be a tricky signing mainly given he was Chelsea’s captain and also the fact he is reportedly earning £196k-per-week in Spain.

Eze was another player Tottenham closely followed over the summer but, like Gallagher, his wage demands forced them to look elsewhere. Pedro Neto was an alternative to Eze, but he ended up joining Chelsea, Spurs only wanted to trade players and refused to match the Blues’ £54 million offer.

O’Keefe added on X that Daniel Levy’s current focus has been on trimming the wage bill with the focus of the club being on the balance sheets and increasing the valuation for investment.

Is Tottenham’s transfer policy holding them back?

There’s no doubt that Tottenham are building an exciting team for the future with their new additions mixed with the stars coming through their academy.

Bergvall, Gray, Odobert, Yang and Luka Vuskovic are all exciting signings, along with Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear and Luca Williams-Barnett coming through the academy.

But where is the ambition for the club to bring success now? Are these young players going to have to come into a first-team which is struggling and has no real ambition to be successful?

There’s nothing wrong with targeting up-and-coming players but a balance needs to be found between these types of signings and ones that aim to have an immediate impact.
