What Ange Postecoglou told Johan Lange he wants Tottenham to do in the January transfer window

Ange Postecoglou has revealed that he has been in constant dialogue with Tottenham Hotspur;’s sporting director Johan Lange about the January transfer window.

Tottenham require new additions in the winter window given the number of injuries they have suffered across the first half of the season.

When he arrived at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Postecoglou discussed his desire to trim down the Spurs squad but now he has backtracked on that and made it clear that a larger squad is needed.

Spurs face a brutal run of the Christmas period as they play nine matches in December which has left the Australian manager eager for the North London club to make use of the January window.

Ange Postecoglou and Johan Lange’s transfer chat

Ange Postecoglou has suggested that Tottenham’s transfer business will depend largely on the club’s injury situation by the time January rolls around. Spurs currently have six players out but only Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are expected to return before the transfer window opens.

Postecoglou says he and Johan Lange will assess the squad in January and then determine which area most requires new additions. The Spurs reported earlier this month that Tottenham’s priority for January was a centre-back but that could potentially change if they feel other areas have been significantly weakened by injury.

The Spurs boss told the media: “We’re always planning, planning for every scenario. A lot of it will depend on where we are as a squad at that time. Between now and then, it is only really Romero and Van de Ven who will be back in that time frame, but Richy will hopefully be back in the New Year and we will just assess where we are squad-wise.

“But certainly, with Johan, I’ve already had a number of meetings for a strategy in January. I think last year we did a little bit of business which ended up helping us, but nothing concrete now because January is always tricky and it depends on where we are squad-wise.”

Which positions do Tottenham need to straighten the most?

Adding a top central defender must remain a priority for the Lilywhites with Romero and Van de Ven having shown how prone to injury they are again this season. Against Fulham, they will be forced to lineup with Ben Davies and Radu Dragusin for the third game in the last four.

Davies and Dragusin did a great job at the Etihad as they helped keep a clean sheet, but they cannot keep relying on the pair every time Romero and Van de Ven get injured.

Another striker could be an important area to upgrade with concerns over how Dominic Solanke is being overused by Postecoglou. With Richarlison injured and Wil Lankshear not quite ready for senior football, the 59-year-old’s options to replace Solanke are very limited.
