Ange Postecoglou has started putting plans in place for the January transfer window as he looks to make a strong push in the second half of Tottenham’s season.

Postecoglou’s squad still feels quite light in certain areas and the Australian manager will be keen to add to his squad this winter window.

Tottenham, like the majority of the Premier League, are not expected to be particularly busy in January, however, Postecoglou has made it clear to the club the position he most wants to sign.

Tottenham prioritising another centre-back in January

The Spurs News exclusively spoke to transfer insider Graeme Bailey of TBR Football, who said that Tottenham signing a left-sided central defender is the club’s most pressing issue for January.

Spurs want to sign another option to ensure they are well-stocked in this department with their latest injury crisis highlighting their weaknesses at centre-back.

There is no doubting Ben Davies has been a great servant to Tottenham over the last ten years, however, it is far from ideal having the Welshman starting in key games when two defenders are out.

Injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven mean Davies and Radu Dragusin will have to start against Galatsatary and potentially Ipswich Town.

Bailey told exclusively The Spurs News: “I think defence is a worry, especially with Van de Ven being injured, we know they wanted a centre-half before that anyway.

“From what I’m hearing, I think especially now a left-sided centre-back looks to be the priority because that’s the area they are most short in. They cannot afford another major injury there.”

Meanwhile, The Spurs News has already reported that Tottenham have no intention of selling Dragusin in January, despite some frustration at his minutes and some interest from Italian clubs.

Tottenham looking at a left-back option in the longer term

Tottenham are in no rush to bring in a new left-back with central defence a more pressing issue and this position being seen as a longer-term target.

Spurs supporters have been calling for the club to sign a new left-back as they are short on cover for Destiny Udogie. Currently, they have Djed Spence and Archie Gray as replacement full-back options, with both players able to play on either side.

“I think a left-back is just a long-term thing, they need a backup for Udogie and someone who is similar to him. But obviously, the central defensive issue is a bit more pressing,” Bailey added.
