Tottenham ready to make Cristian Romero significant contract offer to stay but there is a catch

Tottenham Hotspur are desperate to keep hold of Cristain Romero and are ready to make him a major offer to stay in North London.

Romero has become one of the best central defenders in Europe during his time at Tottenham and has subsequently drawn interest from some of the continent’s biggest clubs. Real Madrid have been linked with Romero as they look to bolster their defensive options.

The Lilywhites are eager to keep hold of the World Cup winner, however, there is a big barrier which is currently preventing him from committing his long-term future to Spurs.

Tottenham ready to make Cristian Romero joint highest earner

The Spurs News exclusively spoke to transfer insider Graeme Bailey of TBR Football who has revealed that Tottenham are prepared to make Cristain Romero the club’s joint highest earner. The North London club are keen to tie down Romero’s future over the next year despite his current deal running until 2028.

Bailey told The Spurs News: “There’s an eagerness of Tottenham’s side to get him locked down, they’d like to do it over the next year and we’ll see how that pans out. I don’t believe from Romero’s camp that they are in a hurry to sign a new deal. Tottenham are willing to make him the highest-paid player or one of them.”

However, there is a big obstacle blocking the Aregtine from committing his future to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with that being a lack of Champions League football. The 26-year-old wants to be playing in Europe’s elite competition and that will be a major factor in whether he would sign a new contract or not.

“But, he needs to be playing Champions League football. He’s played the same amount of times in the Champions League for Atalanta as he has for Tottenham, he didn’t move to Tottenham to move sideways, he moved to progress. That’s a real issue, but Spurs want to play in the Champions League so they are hoping to match his ambition.”

How have Tottenham faired without Romero under Postecoglou?

The defender has now missed Tottenham’s last five matches with a toe injury and is set to miss the next two games against Bournemouth and Chelsea. Romero is due back in training early next week.

His absence along with Micky van de Ven has been a big blow for Tottenham with Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies having to fill in. Dragusin and Davies have done a decent job filling in for the pair, however, the drop-off in quality is still fairly significant.
