Tottenham Hotspur backed away from Patrick Dorgu move despite Gareth Bale comparisons

Tottenham Hotspur chose not to bring in a new left back this summer but that position will surely be a priority for Ange Postecoglou come 2025.

Left back hasn’t been a position of great success for Tottenham Hotspur in recent years.

Once Danny Rose’s elite powers faded, Tottenham encountered problems.

Ben Davies has been a solid performer but not particularly dynamic going forward whilst Ryan Sessegnon failed to live up to expectations before being released this summer.

Sergio Reguilon started well but now finds himself completely unwanted at Tottenham and Ivan Perisic – whilst playing as a wing back – only lasted 18 months in North London.

Tottenham appear to have struck gold with Destiny Udogie but his injury at the end of last season showed that Spurs do need another option in the long term.

Tottenham Hotspur eyeing Patrick Dorgu

One player Tottenham appear to have on the radar is Lecce star Patrick Dorgu.

Reports back in April suggested that Tottenham were showing an interest in signing Dorgu with a £17million price tag on his head.

No summer deal materialised but Tottenham are again being connected with the young left back.

Fabrizio Romano claims that Tottenham did have Dorgu on a shortlist of potential summer signings.

Chelsea were in the race for Dorgu as well, as they often are for… well, pretty much any player on the market.

Romano claims that Lecce’s demands ultimately resulted in no deal being done as they wanted big money.

Despite £17million being the alleged asking price months ago, Lecce actually demanded €30million to €35million – around £30million.

Tottenham seemingly backed away at that point but Dorgu may be a name to keep close tabs on for the future.

Who is Spurs target Dorgu?

Dorgu hails from Copenhagen in Denmark and is of both Nigerian and Swedish descent.

The 19-year-old joined the Nordsjælland youth ranks as a kid but was plucked by Italian side Lecce in 2022.

Whoever scouted Dorgu has struck gold as the left back has already played 38 first-team games for Lecce, recording two goals and one assist.

Dorgu has impressed in Italy’s top flight and has even been compared to two players Tottenham fans know very, very well.

As quoted by Calciomercato, Lecce boss suggested that Dorgu could be on the same path to stardom as Gareth Bale.

Dorgu has played as a left back and as a right winger, so Gotti seems similar traits in his prized asset.

“He could have been a full-back, but he had goals on him. This can happen with Dorgu, you have to read his path,” said Gotti.

Gotti has also told Tuttomercatoweb that he sees similarities between Dorgu and now-Tottenham star Udogie.

Gotti coached Udogie at Udinese, so he has overseen the development of both players in Italy.

“They have several aspects in common. The points in common are great stamina and good technical management of the ball. The points of difference are that they are two different guys. Surely both have very high potential,” said Gotti.

Tottenham may well see that comparison too and could view Dorgu as the ideal long-term competition for Udogie under Ange Postecoglou.
