Tottenham Hotspur could look to strengthen their midfield in the January transfer window.

In the summer transfer window, Tottenham signed Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich.

Palhinha is already shining for Spurs, impressing in their 3-0 win against London rivals West Ham United last weekend.

It now looks like the Europa League winners could turn to one of the 30-year-old’s Portugal teammates to improve Thomas Frank’s midfield options.

Tottenham ‘likely to be in contention’ to sign Ruben Neves in January

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves could be set to return to the Premier League, with Tottenham being just one side who are thought to be interested in the Al-Hilal man.

According to CaughtOffside’s Daily Briefing, Spurs are “likely to be in contention” for Neves’ signature if he decides to leave Saudi Arabia in January.

They could face competition for the 28-year-old, though, with the same outlet claiming that Newcastle United and Manchester United also have their eyes on him.

Tottenham’s midfield has been solid during this early part of the season. Palhinha, Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr have all had good games under Frank.

Bergvall even grabbed his first Premier League goal for Spurs in the victory over West Ham.

Bergvall’s run for his goal left Paul Robinson mesmerised, with the retired goalkeeper describing it as a moment of “absolute perfection”.

Ruben Neves’ stance on leaving Al-Hilal

Convincing Neves to leave the Saudi Pro League may not be too difficult. The Daily Briefing’s report says the Portugal international is open to offers and wants to return to European football.

Spurs just need to persuade him to join them if the likes of United and Newcastle do indeed enter the fray for his signature.

Whoever signs Neves, if he does leave Al-Hilal, will be getting a very talented midfielder. “He has everything; he’s a boy wonder, he has the world at his feet,” Conor Coady told Wolves’ official club website when talking about his former teammate in 2021.

If Palhinha and the rest of Tottenham’s midfielders maintain the level that they are at, however, then perhaps Frank will not even need Neves.
