Tottenham Hotspur may have just received a major boost in their hopes of keeping hold of Cristian Romero with Real Madrid making a big decision over their centre-back plans for 2025.

Romero has been linked with a move to Madrid with the 15-time European champions making the signing of a new centre-back a priority for next summer.

The Argentine’s commitment to the North London club has been questioned at times with his recent subpar performances. But given the standards he has set whilst in N17, Tottenham fans are still desperate to keep hold of him and their chances of doing so have just been given a major boost.

Real Madrid make huge decision over transfer plans

Real Madrid have chosen Arsenal’s William Saliba as their number one target for centre-back in 2025, according to Le10sport.

Los Blancos had been choosing between Romero and Saliba and the 15-time European champions have opted for the Frenchman to become their main target.

Romero heading to Madrid is not off the cards just yet though as the Gunners are expected to put up a strong fight to keep the 23-year-old. Saliba is of course a key member of Mikel Arteta’s team and a move would likely require a a world-record deal for a defender.

Should the deal for the Arsenal man fail to materialise, it is likely they would then turn their attention to the World Cup winner.

Contacts with the defender’s entourage have already taken place and Madrid are now working to put in place the foundations for a potential move for the summer of 2025. It is also reported that they are willing to pay whatever to land him.

Why Tottenham are well-equipped for Romero’s departure

Tottenham looked to be well-equipped for the potential departure of Romero. Radu Dragusin looks like a player more than capable of filling his boots, meanwhile, Micky van de Ven is quickly becoming one of the best central defenders in the Premier League.

Spurs also have a very talented young centre-back in Luka Vuskovic who is showing great progression in Belgium. The 17-year-old is making his mark on loan at Westerlo in the Belgian Pro League having netted four goals for the club this season.
