Dick Advocaat on Memphis to Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham are no doubt looking far and wide for potential additions this summer but free transfers would be a surprise.
It’s not often that we see Tottenham go down that route; Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster arrived on free transfers two years ago, but it’s not usually a market Tottenham shop in very often.
One big-name forward is available for free this summer though with Memphis available after leaving Atletico Madrid.
The Dutch international has been let go this summer and featured prominently for the Netherlands at Euro 2024.
Now 30, Memphis scored 13 goals in 40 games for Atletico having previously bagged 14 goals in 42 outings for Barcelona.
Memphis isn’t an absolutely lethal striker but has shown his quality on the ball when dropping in from a striking role – something which could appeal to Postecoglou.
Dutch pundits have been discussing Memphis and his next move, with former Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat simply suggesting that Tottenham is the ideal club for him.
As quoted by Voetbal Primeur, Johan Derksen and Rene van der Gijp suggested that Gakpo ‘will not get a good club’ after Euro 2024.
Advocaat suggested Tottenham, suggesting that Memphis can be an ‘excellent striker’ for Spurs.
Derksen simply doesn’t believe that Memphis will be able to keep up with the pace at Tottenham, seemingly believing that his time with top clubs is over.
Memphis move unlikely
We would be surprised to see Tottenham go for Memphis this summer.
Yes, there is quality in his locker, but he isn’t especially known as being great at pressing – something crucial to the setup under Spurs boss Postecoglou.
Memphis would no doubt command hefty wages as a free agent and Spurs either need to focus on a proven goalscorer or an up-and-coming hitman.
Memphis doesn’t really tick either box and whilst he will surely find a club this summer, we can’t see it being Spurs.
