There is plenty of excitement around Tottenham as they prepare for their return to Champions League football, however the club have made a glaring mistake which could end up costing them in their opening game.

Spurs announce their return to the top level of European competition on Tuesday as they host Villarreal, and go into the game off the back of a strong start to the season.

Thomas Frank has led his new side to three wins in their first four games, including a dominant victory in the London derby against West Ham last time out.

Lucas Bergvall impressed greatly against West Ham, and is likely to start against Villarreal as Frank tries to work out who exactly is in his best side.

Tottenham have made glaring error ahead of Champions League clash vs Villarreal

It remains to be seen just how many Spurs fans will be in attendance at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. With hours to go until kick-off, there are still plenty of unsold tickets for their first Champions League game.

According to the Mail Online, it is believed that this is a result of the prices of tickets around the ground, with some standard tickets costing as much as £96.

It can be expected that Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea will comfortably sell out when they host games in the competition, and Spurs should have done anything they could to make sure this was the case for them.

A full crowd in attendance would be buoyed by the return to Champions League football, however the club’s own mistake is a reason why they could not have that much of an advantage when Villarreal arrive in North London.

Familiar face set to return vs Spurs

There are a number of recognisable players in the Villarreal side from their time playing in the Premier League, including Juan Foyth after his time at Spurs.

However, the most familiar of all the players will be Manor Solomon, who completed a late loan move to the La Liga side for the remainder of the season.

As per UEFA’s rules, Solomon is eligible to face Spurs in the Champions League, and after being an unused substitute at the weekend he could make his debut against his parent club.
