Tottenham Hotspur’s third-round Carabao Cup tie against Doncaster Rovers could be the perfect opportunity for one player.
This year, Tottenham have made some big signings, bringing in the likes of Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus over the summer.
They also signed Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich in February before making that deal a permanent one.
However, while Simons and Kudus are already making an impact in north London, Tel has struggled.

Mathys Tel needs to deliver against Doncaster
Since arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in February, Tel has scored just three goals. He has a great opportunity to add to his record on Wednesday, though, when Spurs take on Doncaster, a League One side.
Of course, the 20-year-old has not been an automatic starter so has not always been given the opportunity to score goals. However, Tottenham supporters will still be disappointed with what they have seen from the youngster so far.
Tel was one of Bayern’s most talented young players and was also attracting interest from some of Spurs’ Premier League rivals before his move to north London, including Chelsea.
So far, they have not seen the hype. But there is still time for that to change, with the Doncaster game perhaps being the starting point.
If not, then the Frenchman could find himself in serious trouble. Manager Thomas Frank already seems to prefer another squad player over him.

Thomas Frank trusts Wilson Odobert more than Mathys Tel
Tel is not giving up on his Tottenham career just yet, but he finds himself in a real battle with Wilson Odobert to be the back-up left winger.
Odobert has played more games and minutes than Tel in the Premier League this term so far.

| Player | Appearances | Starts | Minutes |
| Mathys Tel | 3 | 1 | 98 |
| Wilson Odobert | 5 | 1 | 141 |
Tel can also play up front; however, Frank has Richarlison, Dominic Solanke and Randal Kolo Muani for the position. When the France Under-21 international started there in Spurs’ 3-0 win against West Ham United, he was not entirely convincing either.
Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith felt that Tel looked “awkward” in the position.
It remains to be seen where Frank uses him on Wednesday. But wherever the former Bayern forward starts, he must deliver.
