Tottenham player ratings vs Brighton as Mohammed Kudus improves and Xavi Simons makes an impact

Spurs had to settle for a point after 90 minutes of non-stop action against Brighton.

The first half was end-to-end and made for an entertaining but stressful watch.

Brighton took a two-goal lead thanks to a cool rounding of the keeper from Yankuba Minteh and a strike from Yasin Ayari that took the roof off the Amex.

Richarlison would get one back for Spurs right before the break, before a Mohammed Kudus cross left Jan Paul van Hecke unable to avoid putting the ball in his own net in the second half.

Here’s how each player got on.

Spurs player ratings vs Brighton

Guglielmo Vicario – 6

The Spurs stopper won’t want to see a replay of that first goal. Through no fault of his own, he was made to look a small bit silly by Minteh’s quick feet.

Maybe he could have done better for the second, but Ayari is known for having that kind of range.

Pedro Porro – 6

Apart from a ridiculous 70-yard pass to put Richarlison through on goal, Porro didn’t do too much of note.

That was the case for all the Spurs defenders, with Brighton creating little danger outside of their goals.

Cristian Romero – 6

The first goal was as tight a call as you’re ever likely to see, with Romero’s sleeve keeping Minteh onside.

He made a couple of good recoveries, but wasn’t made to sweat by the Brighton attack.

Micky van de Ven – 6

A quiet game from van de Ven, but like his other defenders, can’t be blamed for the goals conceded.

Destiny Udogie – 7

It was a first Premier League start of the season for Udogie, and it was a promising showing. He looked dangerous going forward, but possibly could have done better tracking Minteh for his first.

Lucas Bergvall – 6

Bergvall was quieter against Brighton than in his previous two performances.

He clearly had instructions from Thomas Frank to keep running into the box, and he came close to latching onto a number of low crosses. But things just weren’t clicking for the young Swede.

Joao Palhinha – 6

The Portuguese enforcer played as we’ve come to expect, breaking up play and putting in some crunching tackles.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 6

Bentancur dropped in between the centre-backs during build-up, attempting to give Spurs some control in a scrappy game.

He made way for Xavi Simons on the hour mark, as Frank looked to take a more attacking approach.

Mohammed Kudus – 7

It looked like it was going to be a long afternoon for Kudus, with Ferdi Kadioglu sticking to him for most of the first half.

As the game wore on, though, Kudus started getting the better of his defender. It was his whipped cross that gave Spurs the late equaliser, leaving Van Hecke helpless to avoid his own goal.

Richarlison – 7

With Randal Kolo Muani out injured, Richarlison was nailed on to start. He was in the right place at the right time to convert Spurs’ first.

He played well but didn’t do enough to make his presence known, and Frank was animated on the sideline, urging him to stay central.

Wilson Odobert – 5

Odobert got the nod today, but had a quiet game. Udogie looked the more threatening on the left flank.

Substitutes

Xavi Simons – 7

Simons’ introduction came at a time when Spurs were on top, but lacking creativity. The impact was instant. He quickly had Bart Verbruggen at full stretch to save his attempt after an incisive run into the box.

Simons kept popping up in dangerous positions, but probably should have done better when the ball rolled to him on the penalty spot. Definitely coming into his own, though.

Brennan Johnson – 5

If Johnson touched the ball, I didn’t see it.

Djed Spence – N/A

Archie Gray – N/A
