What Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have said on Tottenham’s trophy chances, they believe there’s one thing holding Spurs back

Tottenham’s trophy drought is something that has been over-clouding the club for some time now.

It has been 16 years since the Lilywhites last tasted silverware – with Jonathan Woodgate’s extra-time header handing Spurs the League Cup way back in 2008.

Since then, Daniel Levy has helped transform Tottenham into a footballing juggernaut off the pitch, with the Spurs chairman playing a key role in the transition to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Lilywhites however have failed to translate that success onto the pitch going trophyless under the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte.

Current Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has been bullish about Tottenham’s trophy hopes though, with pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards also providing a positive verdict on the north London club’s silverware ambitions.

Alan Shearer and Micah Richards give verdict on Tottenham’s trophy chances

Currently sat 10th in the Premier League at the time of writing, it’s safe to say Tottenham’s chances of mounting an unlikely title charge have already faded away.

The Lilywhites however do remain in three cup competitions (League Cup, Europa League and FA Cup), with a quarter-final clash against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup to look forward to.

Whilst featuring on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Shearer and Richards revealed that they believe Tottenham’s best chance of silverware this season will be in the shape of a cup – but insisted Spurs must fix their inconsistency problem if they are to have any chance of ending their trophy drought.

Shearer: “They could yeh because as they proved against City and Villa in the league, they can beat anything that’s chucked at them. But it’s the inconsistency so you don’t know. The answer to that question is yes they could.

“I would agree with that, I think they could be a good cup team because they can upset anyone on their day, it’s the consistency that they’re missing.”

Shearer and Richards’ thoughts have been echoed by their fellow former BBC pundit Ian Wright, who criticised Tottenham’s inconsistency in the wake of the Ipswich defeat.

What is Tottenham’s best chance of winning a trophy?

With three shots still left at a trophy this season, Spurs have a very realistic chance of ending their 16-year wait for silverware.

Many could argue that the Carabao Cup is arguably Tottenham’s best shot at a trophy, in which they must first overcome Manchester United at home.

If Spurs are to reach the semi-finals, they could possibly play the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle – with the semi-finals being across two legs, Postecoglou’s side will fancy their chances against any opponent.

Despite losing 3-2 last time out against Galatasaray, Spurs still sit in the automatic qualification spots in the Europa League and are the bookie’s favourites to lift the trophy come next May.

In the FA Cup meanwhile, Tottenham are still yet to learn their opponents but they will undoubtedly want to get further than they did last campaign – having exited against Manchester City in the fourth round.
