Tottenham’s quest for domestic silverware continues on Wednesday evening as they play host to Manchester City.
Ange Postecoglou has been bullish about Tottenham’s trophy hopes and Spurs will view the Carabao Cup as an ample opportunity to end their 16-year wait for silverware.
To do so though, they must first overcome Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City – a side who of course beat Tottenham in the final of the League Cup back in 2021.
Defeating the reigning Premier League champions is a tough task in itself but it could be made even tougher going off Tottenham’s recent cup record against top six sides.
Tottenham will have to overcome unwanted cup record against Man City
Since reaching the Carabao Cup final in 2021 under Jose Mourinho, Tottenham have failed to recreate any sort of cup success in the years that have followed.
The 2020/21 campaign was actually the last time Spurs managed to defeat a top-six side (Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool) in a cup competition, a penalty shootout win over Frank Lampard’s Chelsea in September 2020.

Since that Chelsea win, the Lilywhites have played three cup ties against fellow top-six sides, losing every single one.
- Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham (Carabao Cup semi-final 1st leg) – Jan 2022
- Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea (Carabao Cup semi-final 2nd leg) – Jan 2022
- Tottenham 0-1 Man City (FA Cup fourth round) – Jan 2024
Tottenham’s home record against Man City may fill fans with optimism
Despite Tottenham’s poor cup record against the top six, Spurs supporters will enter Wednesday’s clash with a hint of hope thanks to their impressive home record against Manchester City.
Spurs rather famously lost 1-0 to Man City the last time Guardiola’s men visited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – a game that ultimately cost north London rivals Arsenal the title.
This time, however, there will be no accusations of Tottenham rolling over and accepting defeat as they look to reach the quarter-finals.
