Tottenham Hotspur will be eager to get back to winning ways on their return to Premier League action this weekend.

With the final international break of 2024 finally out of the way, Spurs can now fully focus on getting their campaign back on track.

Tottenham have suffered from a real lack of consistency this season and found themselves losing games just before an international break.

Spurs head to Manchester City on Saturday, having already beaten Pep Guardiola’s charges once – in the Carabao Cup – this season.

On Thursday, former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan gave his thoughts on Tottenham amid conversations with Spurs coach Nick Montgomery.

Mike Phelan suggests Tottenham are not far from the finished product

Phelan, speaking on the Seaman Says podcast, said Ange Postecoglou has “a lot of positivity about him” and believes they’re not far from the finished product.

Phelan says it’s now just a matter of getting “it all together” in order to build consistency and kick on.

“I’ve seen Spurs a couple of times because I know Nick Montgomery, who’s on the coaching staff there,” began Phelan.

“I worked with him in Australia and when he went up to Hibs I watched him a little bit there, he’s a forward-thinking coach.

“When I speak to him, and you watch Tottenham, I think Ange has got a lot of positivity in him, you know, he’s very positive on that forward aspect of the game and what have you.

“He’s just got to get it all together to make it consistently good, and he’s not that far away to be honest.

“There’s always a bit of doom and gloom at Spurs, I don’t know why that is… but their expectations are huge, which is good.

“And it’s whether the players can stay consistent enough at Spurs to produce big results and they don’t come any bigger than getting a result (at Man City) – whether that’s a draw or win.”

Postecoglou has numerous flaws to sort out at Tottenham

The topic of consistency – or lack thereof – is cropping up a lot amid pundits and commentators who discuss Spurs.

For instance, Ian Wright recently bemoaned Tottenham’s inconsistency, saying it’s something the coaches and players need to work on.

There has also been criticism of Tottenham’s high line, with Spurs legend David Pleat saying there’s a risk that opposition teams will suss them out.

Tottenham are certainly a work in progress at present and hopefully Postecoglou will iron out those flaws in the coming months whilst keeping Spurs in a competitive position this term.
