Since arriving at Spurs on loan from Bayern Munich, Joao Palhinha has been fantastic.

Spurs fans have waxed lyrical about Joao Palhinha, who has become an integral part of Thomas Frank’s set-up.

The Brazilian scored Spurs’ second in the win against Man City a few weeks ago, but his best work has been done out of possession, offering the back line protection that wasn’t there last season.

Spurs have a £27 million option on Palhinha, and from what we’ve seen of him, that could be a bargain.

Joao Palhinha holds two Premier League season records after five games

A defensive-minded six, Palhinha dominates the middle of the park, breaking up play and providing cover for defenders.

During Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Brighton, he made seven tackles, the most of any player in a single game this season. And his impact was noticed. Fabian Hurzeler’s side didn’t create much outside of the two early goals, and his presence was a big reason for that.

That performance has also helped him to the most completed tackles of any player this season with 19.

Spurs didn’t have that sort of presence centrally last season, and looking at the defensive record alone, the improvement is clear to see.

Spurs can sign Palhinha permanently next summer

There have been some fans who have questioned Palhinha’s technical ability, believing that the midfield is missing some creativity when he plays.

Those claims are greatly exaggerated. Palhinha is a top midfielder with plenty of Premier League experience, and while he may not be the most eye-catching in possession, he is efficient in his play and offers invaluable defensive solidity to a side that doesn’t often struggle to create.

The biggest issue last season was conceding goals. It is that simple, and this is a player who will make you concede less.

£27 million feels very low for his quality, and Spurs absolutely should trigger their option at the end of the season.
