The Tottenham Hotspur captain has looked well off the pace this season, and during his latest outing for the national team, his performance has been questioned.

Following his latest display for the Argentine national team, the local media have reacted to the Spurs man’s performance, and it did not seem like his finest evening’s work.
Argentine media question Cristian Romero vs Mauritania
Even the Argentine media have turned on Tottenham defender Cristian Romero after he struggled against Mauritania.
The 27-year-old is usually adored in Argentina, but the media rated his latest performance against the African side very low.
After the match, TYCSports rated Romero’s performance a five out of ten and wrote: “Well, in the advances and in some crosses where the Cuti showed his ability to time.
“He also took the opportunity to be in physical presence, as usual. It was not the best game of the central defence.”
With Lionel Messi starting on the bench, Romero was handed the captain’s armband, showing how highly rated he is in the national team set-up.

Romero is an almost guaranteed starter for Argentina at next summer’s World Cup in North America, partnering Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi on the night.
Tottenham have actually considered signing Senesi in the summer, with the defender set to be out of contract with the Cherries.
But with Romero likely to leave and Spurs currently in a relegation battle, partnering the pair in North London looks unlikely at this stage.
The truth behind Cristian Romero’s release clause at Tottenham
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that there is no truth behind the report of Romero having a clause in his contract which would allow him to join Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid or Barcelona for 60 million euros.
The Italian journalist told his YouTube channel: “I received lots of questions about one of the reports regarding the Argentina defender, and a special release clause in his contract at Tottenham.
“According to reports, there is a clause to let Cuti Romero go to Real Madrid, Barcelona or Atletico Madrid for 60 million euros.
“But my information is that Cuti Romero’s contract does not include any sort of release clause. So there is nothing guaranteed about Cuti Romero’s exit clause.
After signing his new contract with Spurs in the summer, the defender had a gentleman’s agreement with the club to leave if a Spanish club came in with a strong offer.
However, with Daniel Levy likely having been the one leading the negotiation and him not being there anymore, it’s unclear what the North London club will decide.
“During the negotiation in summer 2025 in the conversations between Cuti Romero and Tottenham to extend the contract, it was discussed something like a gentleman’s agreement if a top club from Spain, not from England, arrives with a good amount of money,” added Romano.
“This was a verbal gentleman’s agreement. But don’t forget that at that time, there was Daniel Levy at the club, and today, Daniel Levy is no longer there, so it’s a completely different situation.”
