Tottenham Hotspur journalist Alasdair Gold has recommended Ange Postecoglou to try Cristian Romero in a new role after the Australian manager just lost one of his key players.
Postecoglou will be sweating over the defender’s fitness after Romero returned to Tottenham early with a foot injury and he is currently a doubt to feature in their next few matches.
Spurs’ first game after the international break is a trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City with Postecoglou’s team looking to bounce back from their disappointing defeat to Ipswich Town.
Man City is the first of nine matches in the space of just 29 days and Postecoglou will enter this run of games needing to find a replacement for one of his best players.

Could Cristian Romero replace Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield?
Alasdair Gold has suggested that Postecoglou could try to use Romero in midfield with Rodrigo Bentancur suspended for seven matches. The FA handed Bentancur a significant suspension that will see him miss games against Man City, Fulham, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Southampton, Manchester United and Liverpool.
Now, Postecoglou must try to find a replacement for the 27-year-old with Yves Bissouma, Archie Gray and Pape Matar Sarr among his options. However, Gold has made a left-field suggestion that Romero has the technical ability to play in midfield and be the man to replace Bentancur.
Gold said on his YouTube channel: “You could go wild and play Romero there, I don’t think he’s ever played there from memory but he’s kind of got the technical ability to do it. Has he got the discipline to stay there and do it, I don’t know.”
Could Cristian Romero actually play in midfield?
This certainly seems like a wild suggestion on the face of it, however, Romero most certainly has the technical ability to play as a number six.
The Argentine’s passing ability is very good and a key asset for Spurs when playing out from the back. His ability to break the line and start attacking plays for the team is very underrated.

However, the two big concerns would be whether Romero would be disciplined enough to stick to that new role and with Micky van de Ven still out, Spurs’ centre-back pairing would be Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies.
