Tottenham Hotspur progressed to the Carabao Cup fourth round after beating Doncaster Rovers on Wednesday.

Joao Palhinha’s overhead kick, Jay McGrath’s own goal and Brennan Johnson’s late strike ensured that Tottenham made it to the next round of the competition.

Thomas Frank was not in the mood for an upset so started a very strong team. As well as Palhinha, the likes of Pedro Porro and Xavi Simons also started the game.

Chelsea were interested in signing Simons in the summer, but Spurs managed to land his signature in the end.

Xavi Simons tops list for key passes

Simons played just over an hour against Doncaster before being replaced by Lucas Bergvall.

It was not the best performance that the attacking midfielder has ever put in on a football pitch, but he still managed to create a lot of opportunities for his teammates.

In fact, according to Sofascore, Simons made the most key passes in the game (seven). He also created one big chance.

Simons was, of course, on corner duty. But it has become quite obvious in his first few games as a Tottenham player that he can make things happen.

Next up for Simons and Tottenham is a Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Thomas Frank helped convince Xavi Simons to join Tottenham

Tottenham fans have Frank to thank for Simons’ arrival. According to the player’s agent, the Dane played a huge role in convincing him to join the club.

When Ali Barat spoke about Simons’ transfer, he said: “A talk that Xavi had with Thomas Frank was really key because he hit on a lot of good points.”

Spurs really needed some big signings after losing their captain and one of their greatest ever players in the summer after Son Heung-min decided that it was time for a new challenge.

Tottenham would have been gutted to see him go, yet they are still going strong without him. Son hopes to return to Spurs one day so that he can say a proper goodbye.
