Thomas Frank has given an honest assessment of Tottenham’s decision to allow Damola Ajayi to face Spurs in the Carabao Cup.

The 19-year-old is currently on loan with the League One outfit who have earned a trip to Tottenham in the third round of the competition after seeing off Middlesbrough and Accrington Stanley.

Spurs starlet Ajayi is best known at the club for his goal in the Europa League against Elfsborg, coming off the bench and bagging in the 3-0 victory on his debut in January.

Now, he’s set to return to north London to face his parent club with Doncaster on Wednesday night – and Frank says the club are ‘lucky’ to be in this situation.

Thomas Frank thinks Damola Ajayi playing against Tottenham is a ‘great opportunity’

Speaking about Tottenham’s decision to allow Ajayi to play on Wednesday despite being cup tied, Frank said: “I think it’s okay. He’s on loan at another club. I know the Premier League have this if you’re on loan from a club, you’re not allowed to play.

“We decided to loan him out because it was good for his development. I’ve done that a thousand times. Maybe not a thousand times, a lot of times at Brentford, but we haven’t been that lucky to face one of our own players.

“It is what it is. I think it’s a great opportunity for him.”

Ajayi’s Europa League performance last term is the only appearance he’s made for Spurs. Now, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will get to watch him again – just not in Tottenham colours.

How has Damola Ajayi got on in League One with Doncaster Rovers?

Ajayi signed on a season-long loan this summer, scoring his first goal in the 4-0 victory over Boro in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

He’s made 10 appearances in total for Rovers, with his goal in the cup his only goal contribution so far.

The teenager is yet to be in the starting XI in the league, though, being limited to appearances off the bench currently.

He has started both their League Cup ties, though, and will no doubt be hoping to have an impact against his parent club.
