Tottenham Hotspur got their pre-season up and running with victory against Hearts of Midlothian on Wednesday night.
Ange Postecoglou‘s side made the trip up to Edinburgh and fielded a much-changed starting XI with a defence made almost all off midfielders.
However, Spurs were able to get the job done and they were able to do so without really getting out of second gear in a comfortable 5-1 victory.
One of those was young Archie Gray who was making his first start for Tottenham after making the big-money move from Leeds United.
And it was a performance which sparked a big reaction from the fans on social media.

Archie Gray dazzles on Tottenham debut
Gray arrived as a midfielder, however, Postecoglou will have been well aware that the 18-year-old was able to play in defence.
The former Leeds man has played at right-back but started the game from centre-back on Wednesday night at Tynecastle.
Showing this level of versatility, Gray is a player who looks certain to fit right into Postecoglou’s plans from the start.
His performance saw Spurs fans take to social media in their droves as they waxed lyrical about their only permanent signing of the summer.
One fan was clearly stunned by what they saw, saying on X, ‘Best player in the pitch…’. Meanwhile another even claimed he looked better than Mali international Yves Bissouma, ‘To be fair he looks cooler under pressure than Bissouma’.
Clearly, Spurs fans feel they have got a real quality signing, with one saying, ‘He’s absolutely quality. Leeds fans weren’t joking’. Another another added, ‘What a signing, been class so far’.
One fan was even amazed Spurs were able to sign such a talent, claiming, ‘Can’t believe we have such a baller on our squad’. Whilst another added, ‘best player so far’.

For an 18-year-old, Gray was able to show some impressive composure on the ball – especially considering he played out of position.
The versatile youngster added another feather to his cap as he showed he could even be capable of playing at centre-back if absolutely needed.
Here is his display in numbers…
- 45 minutes played
- 1 clearance
- 3 interceptions
- 1 tackle
- 1/1 ground duels won
- 3/3 aerial duels won
- 0 fouls

Tottenham could have a real talent on their hands here with Gray.
And it is going to be interesting to see just how many opportunities Postecoglou is going to hand him this season.
