Ange Postecoglou fears ‘significant’ Tottenham Hotspur injury blow after beating Coventry City

Tottenham Hotspur are through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup but only after a testing time against Championship side Coventry City on Wednesday night.

Ange Postecoglou came into this game simply needing to win.

The Tottenham Hotspur boss has talked up his ability to win trophies, backing himself to bring glory to North London.

Postecoglou was under the microscope as a result with the EFL Cup clash against Coventry City viewed as a real test – especially given their FA Cup run last season.

Spurs were frankly dreadful for large parts of the game and deservedly fell behind to Brandon Thomas-Asante’s opener.

Djed Spence hauled Tottenham level late on and there was a late twist in the tale as Brennan Johnson raced clear to score the winner.

Ange Postecoglou confirms Tottenham Hotspur blow

Johnson has been under fire of late and this goal will have been a major boost for the Welsh wide man.

Make no mistake though, this was another disappointing Tottenham performance and the late show means that Spurs managed to avoid disaster this time around.

This is one game that Tottenham fans will want to forget about despite the late win and Postecoglou has actually received a blow.

Winger Wilson Odobert suffered a first-half injury and had to be substituted in favour of match-winner Johnson.

The situation doesn’t look good though as Postecoglou has now told Football London that Odobert appears to have suffered a ‘fairly significant’ injury.

“Hard to say, Wilson looked fairly significant, so we’ll just wait and see,” said Postecoglou.

Tottenham could face issues out wide after Wilson Odobert injury

Odobert’s injury is a source of real frustration with the Frenchman viewed as a player who can make an impact with his pace.

Snapped up from Burnley in the summer, Odobert has shown flashes of his quality in a Spurs shirt.

Odobert may not be in action for a while now though and that will be a big blow for Postecoglou.

Spurs would have loved to see Odobert feature prominently in the EFL Cup and the Europa League but are now left hoping that he isn’t out for too long.

Add in Timo Werner’s knock against Coventry and Spurs aren’t exactly blessed out wide all of a sudden, especially with Dejan Kulusevski impressing in a more central role this season.

This is not what Postecoglou needed right now and he just has to hope and pray for good news on the injury front.
