Jose Mourinho may miss out as new club join race to sign ‘phenomenal’ Tottenham Hotspur player

Tottenham Hotspur are still looking to make signings this summer but exits may be needed to unlock some additions for Ange Postecoglou.

Archie Gray has joined the Tottenham Hotspur ranks this summer, marking a major investment from Leeds United.

Tottenham had already landed Lucas Bergvall back in February before extending Timo Werner’s loan from RB Leipzig.

That is encouraging stuff for Tottenham but more additions will be needed – especially with a Europa League campaign on the horizon.

The reality is that Tottenham do need to offload some players in order to clear the decks and raise some funds.

The likes of Emerson Royal, Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil are surely available this summer, just like Sergio Reguilon and Djed Spence after returning from loan deals.

Galatasaray want Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Another player who may be available this summer is midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Dane struggled for Premier League starts in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge and surely wants more action.

Add in that Hojbjerg is out of contract in 2025 and Tottenham may well fancy selling this summer.

Hojbjerg played well at Euro 2024 and the 28-year-old will not be short of interest if Tottenham are willing to sell.

A proven premier League defensive midfielder, Hojbjerg should be a decent source of cash for Tottenham – even with a year left on his contract.

Borussia Dortmund are believed to be interested in Hojbjerg this summer but one club appear to have confirmed their interest.

Galatasaray vice-president İbrahim Hatipoğlu has now told CNN Turk that he thinks Hojbjerg is a ‘very good player’, suggesting that Galatasaray are in the race for his signature.

Hatipoğlu suggest that Hojbjerg has ‘many suitors’ and isn’t looking to rush a decision on his next club, leaving Galatasaray to be patient in the race for his signature.

“Højbjerg is a very good player. He has many suitors. He says he wants to decide after seeing all the options. It may take more time than others,” said Hatipoğlu.

A move to Galatasaray would see Hojbjerg reunite with his former Tottenham teammate Davinson Sanchez, who joined the club last summer.

Jose Mourinho may be left furious

Galatasaray’s interest presents Tottenham with a potential route to selling Hojbjerg, but it also means there could be a bidding war on the horizon.

That is because Galatasaray’s bitter rivals Fenerbahce are also interested in signing Hojbjerg this summer.

Fenerbahce have just appointed Jose Mourinho as their new manager in a major coup for the Turkish side.

Mourinho was the man who brought Hojbjerg to Tottenham in 2020 and a reunion may well appeal to the Dane this summer.

Speaking in December 2020, Mourinho called Hojbjerg a ‘phenomenal player’ and it’s no surprise to see him targeting a reunion.

“Pierre is, first of all, very intelligent. He reads the game very well. He’s going to be a coach one day, for sure,” said Mourinho. “He’s a pain, asking questions about why we do this and why we do that. On the pitch, he reads the situation very, very well and the people that surround him are really compact, they read the game.”

“Physically he’s very, very strong and technically he’s much better than people think. Because sometimes people think the guy that is good technically is the guy that does the backheel. The guy that is good technically is the guy that does something wonderful. But these are not my words. These are words from coaches of 30, 40 years ago. Simplicity is genius. And the guy is so simple in everything he does with the ball. And I think he’s a phenomenal player. Congratulations, Mr. Levy,” he added.

Mourinho would no doubt hate to miss out on Hojbjerg anyway, but losing him to Fenerbahce’s fiercest rivals would really sting.

Tottenham won’t mind at all; if both rivals are desperate to prevent each other from striking a deal, there is a chance for the price to go up higher and higher – an ideal situation for Spurs, but only if Hojbjerg fancies the move to Turkiye.
