Frenkie de Jong discusses recent rumours

According to some reports, Tottenham had lodged a shock £51m bid for the midfielder in recent weeks as his future at Barcelona remains uncertain.

But now, the 26-year-old has come out and spoken about those links to provide some clarity over where his future lies.

Speaking to Spanish outlet Marca, De Jong said: “Lately I’ve been getting a bit irritated. I’m angry with what the press writes in general, a lot of things come out that aren’t true. I can’t understand it. They keep saying things that aren’t true. I don’t know why you’re not ashamed to say it.

“You are talking a lot about my contract, situation, salary… it’s a lot of smoke and lies. You say I’m getting paid like €40m and so on… it’s far from reality. I’m not going to say figures. They have invented a story that is not true. I’m very happy at Barca, it’s the club of my dreams and I hope to continue playing here for many years to come.”

Frenkie de Jong salary

It has to be said there was probably not too many Spurs fans who were getting their hopes up over these rumours anyway.

The Barcelona midfielder is believed to be earning an obscene amount of money at the Nou Camp and it is the type of money which Spurs just do not pay out in wages.

Even Fabrizio Romano weighed in on the speculation recently and claimed there was no news to report of a bid having come from Tottenham.

We are heavily stocked in the midfield department with the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison.

There doesn’t feel the space needed in Postecoglou’s side for a big money central midfielder unless one of them are to be sold in the summer.

Regardless, it sounds like the Dutchman is pretty keen to remain a Barca player for the foreseeable future as he calls it the club of his dreams.
