Tottenham Hotspur have started assessing the goalkeeper market suggesting Guglielmo Vicario’s future at the club could be in doubt.
Some of Vicario’s performances this season have been criticised by fans and the media, with the Italian’s weakness on set pieces becoming a major worry for Ange Postecoglou’s team.
Now, The Spurs News can reveal one of the shot-stoppers the North London club have been looking at ahead of next summer.

Tottenham have been watching Lucas Chevalier
The Spurs News exclusively spoke to transfer insider Graeme Bailey of TBR Football, who revealed that Tottenham have been keeping tabs on Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. Chelsea, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich are among the other clubs who have also watched him.
Chevalier is seen as one of the top emerging goalkeepers around Europe with his performances for Lille catching the eye of many elite clubs. His displays from the Ligue 1 club earned him his first-ever call-up to the French national team.
Spurs have been making checks on the 23-year-old as they begin to assess the goalkeeper market in case they decide to move on from Vicario. Bailey told the site: “Tottenham have looked at Lucas Chevalier. They aren’t specifically looking to replace Vicario yet, but it’s one where clubs have to do their homework even if they think they are ok in a certain position.
“If Tottenham did get to a point where they wanted to move on from Vicario they’ve got to know who is next and Chevalier is one who they have been looking at. He is an outstanding young goalkeeper and has just been named in the French squad.”
How does Lucas Chevalier compare to Guglielmo Vicario?
Chevalier has been playing for a strong Lille team this season who are currently sitting fourth in Ligue 1 and making a strong push for Champions League qualification. Lille are also on seven points after four matches in Europe’s elite competition.
The obvious comparison fans will want to know is how Chevalier matches up to Vicario when it comes to defending corners. The Italian has conceded twice from corners this season in the league whilst the 23-year-old is yet to concede from a set piece, however, neither keeper has a particularly high cross-claimed percentage.
In terms of distribution, the Tottenham man seems to have the edge over the French star, although Lille play a more direct style of football and he is being asked to be more direct. Postecoglou wants his team to play out from the back, so Vicario is being asked to make shorter and simpler passes.
| Stat | Vicario | Chevalier |
| Minutes | 990 | 990 |
| Goals against | 13 | 11 |
| Save | 23 | 34 |
| Save percentage | 63.9 | 77.8 |

| Crosses stopped | 16 | 11 |
| Passes attempted | 370 | 262 |

Tottenham will continue to assess Viacrio over the rest of the season and scout the goalkeeper market to determine whether there is an upgrade worth making.
