Tottenham Hotspur emerged victorious against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, in what was probably the finest performance of the season.
What a week for Tottenham. After beating Manchester City midweek, Ange Postecoglou’s side conquered yet another Champions League powerhouse in Aston Villa.
Dominic Solanke was inspired for Tottenham, but there were multiple good Spurs performers against Villa. It was a fantastic team display.
Amid the sea of good performances, there was one man who didn’t really get involved – Guglielmo Vicario. He had a quiet game but ultimately did make a mistake, which was noted as a recurring issue by Tottenham supporters.

Tottenham fans highlight Guglielmo Vicario weakness from set pieces
Spurs’ zonal marking for Morgan Rogers’ goal evidently did not work, and Tottenham fans noted this. More so, there’s a recurring theme of teams sticking a player straight on Vicario from set-pieces, because he simply cant deal with them.
One fan writes: “Vicario has to be one of the worst goalkeepers I’ve ever seen at dealing with corners.”
Another adds: “Spurs are so so bad at defending set pieces. Vicario is also horrendous at commanding his box.”
Another frustrated supporter puts: “You lot are soft with Vicario. I treated Lloris the same. Keepers are so protected, come out wipe everyone out. Weak. Poor keeping.”
Not sure why we’ve still decided not to put an actual player on the ones who stand on Vicario during corners, it’s basic Sunday League stuff,” says another.
A final adds: “Vicario MUST get stronger as the corner kicks problems are on him. He cannot keep getting bodied out the way, other than that, the second-half performance was prime ange ball.”
Vicario problem ultimately down to Ange Postecoglou
As some fans suggested, this is an easy fix, but it still doesn’t change the fact that Vicario does need to get stronger and more commanding from set pieces.
The blame lies with the Tottenham manager, as he identified back in September. He told Sky Sports after the North London Derby defeat: “I know for some reason people think I don’t care about set-pieces, and it’s a narrative that you can keep going on for ages and ages. I understand that.
“Like I said, we work on them all the time, like we do with every other team.
“It is what it is. It’s my burden to carry and I’m happy to do that. Like I’ve always said, for me there’s a bigger picture that’s at play here that’s much more important than the finer details of us getting to where we want to.”
We think they may need to get back on Spurs’ training ground and work a little harder.
