Tottenham Hotspur are putting together their plans for the January transfer window and have identified one key area to strengthen.

It’s clear that Ange Postecoglou’s squad is in need of reinforcements during the next window with Spurs struggling to cope with the demands of competing in multiple competitions.

Tottenham handed Ipswich Town their first Premier League win since 2002 just before the international break as the team looked hung over from their midweek trip to Turkey to face Galatasaray.

There is now one big decision facing Postecoglou as the North London club decides which area of the team most needs upgrading.

Tottenham targeting central defence and left-back

Tottenham have set aside a hefty transfer budget for January as they look to bolster their defensive options, according to Give Me Sport. The North London club want to sort cover for Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie, with a decision now being made on whether to sign a specialist defender or a more versatile option.

The Spurs News reported earlier this month that Tottenham were prioritising a left-sided centre-back and a left-back was seen as a longer-term issue. Although the report from GMS claims the club are undecided yet on which area to prioritise or whether to get someone who can do both roles.

Jonathan Tah is a centre-back Tottenham hold a genuine interest in, however, so do Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona, so a move would be very tricky. The Lilywhites are cautious about signing a specialist central defender in January to avoid blocking the pathway into the first-team for Ashley Phillips, Alfie Dorrington and Luka Vuskovic.

Meanwhile, at left-back, Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu has been identified as a potential target and David Hancko of Feyenoord is another option they like. Dorgu is a very similar attacking profile to Udogie and would provide great competition for the Italian whose performances have dropped off this season.

How does Patrick Dorgu’s stats compare to Destiny Udogie’s?

Dorgu’s stats compared to Udogie’s also highlight the similarities between the two, with both players producing strong attacking output. There are question marks over the pair’s defensive abilities, but that isn’t so much of a concern for Dorgu who often plays on the wing for Lecce.

The Danish defender has featured in a range of different positions this season from left-back to to left-wing back to even at right-wing. He would certainly be a more attacking option if Spurs were to move for him as Udogie cover.

Given their need for both a left-sided central defender and left-back, perhaps finding a versatile player, who like Van de Ven, is capable of playing both roles comfortably.
