It is understood that initially the plan was to sign the 31-year-old on a free transfer in the summer, when his contract was set to expire.

The deal has not been done yet, but talks are understood to be advancing between all parties.

Liverpool are happy to sanction Robertson’s exit in the January transfer window rather than losing him for free in the summer.

What will Robertson bring to Spurs?

Spurs need leadership and expertise, and Robertson ticks both those boxes.

He has been part of Premier League and Champions League-winning campaigns with Liverpool.

The left-back will be expected to play an important role not just on the pitch, but off it as well.

While his best days may be behind him, Tottenham will also be getting him on the cheap, so that is a positive, surely.

He would instantly increase the standards inside the dressing room and improve a lot of players around him.

For a side that has struggled going forward, having Robertson to make marauding runs from left-back may be what it takes in order to climb up the Premier League table.

It remains to be seen if the Liverpool defender is more a Frank recommendation or a board one, as the Spurs manager is also under pressure to turn things around quickly.
