Ange Postecoglou appears to be bringing a new centre-back into the frame at Tottenham Hotspur.

Radu Dragusin‘s arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is imminent. Ange Postecoglou appears to have fended off Bayern Munich for the Romanian’s signature, with the Germans seeking a potential Spurs star instead.

Nevertheless, this means the manager and his coaching staff finally have another centre-half at their disposal.

Micky van de Ven is now back from injury, but Cristian Romero is still sidelined. Dragusin’s arrival will be an interesting one for the latter.

Cristian Romero now has competition

Romero is a phenomenal player – no doubt. The Argentine was an inspired pick-up from Spurs, despite the fact he cost a pretty penny at £42.5M.

The centre-half area had always been a bit of a problematic position for Tottenham Hotspur ever since the departure of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

When Romero came in, he was a breath of fresh air, and it looked like Spurs had picked up a quality player who would be a regular in the starting XI for years to come.

However, after Van de Ven’s, and now Dragusin’s imminent arrival there is for the first time really at Hotspur Way a chance for competition in the centre-back role.

Romero will realise this – and it could mean he has to rethink his game completely.

Cristian Romero is a notorious hothead – that has to change

It’s no secret that Romero is a bit, let’s say, reckless on the football pitch.

Ingrained in his South American nature is a fire that comes out very often from Tottenham – which gets the World Cup winner in some precarious situations.

Since his 2021 arrival, he’s had 20 yellow cards and 2 red cards in the Premier League, in as little as 64 games. But, he’s got away with so many more.

With competition coming in, he’s going to have to change this part of his game.

Postecoglou will know that Romero’s ‘moments of madness’ can easily cost a game for Spurs. The proof is in the pudding.

Romero was shown a straight red card in the 4-1 defeat by Chelsea this season – with Spurs leading at the time of his dismissal.

He was suspended for the subsequent losses to Wolves and Aston Villa, and the draw with Manchester City. But without competition – he knew he’d be back in the side.

Dragusin coming in means this is now a completely different ball game. Will we see a new Cristian Romero going forward?
