One of Tottenham Hotspur’s big summer targets will have left them gutted they didn’t push harder to land him in the summer despite having made a big offer.

The North London club ended up having a relatively successful summer window anyway with Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Yang min-Hyeok all arriving through the door at Hotspur Way.

The only position the Lilywhites’ supporters are frustrated they failed to address was signing an elite winger with Heung-min Son now in the twilight years of his career.

Spurs at some stage will need to think about replacing the South Korean forward and will need to find a really special player to do that successfully.

Raphinha could have been the perfect long-term Son successor

Back in February 2024, Spanish outlet Sport reported that Tottenham had put a £60 million offer on the table for Raphinha, a player who they previously tried to land when he was at Leeds United.

At the time, that looked quite a ridiculous bid considering Raphinha had scored just three times in 20 appearances. However, the 27-year-old has exploded into life this campaign with nine goals and eight assists in just 13 matches.

On Wednesday evening, the winger produced the best display of his career to date as he scored a hat-trick against Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Captaining the team, Raphinha showed the whole of Europe why he is now one of the continent’s best attackers as he tore apart the German side.

Ange Postecoglou’s team are missing one more elite winger to really elevate the team to the next level and the former Leeds star could have been that missing link.

Do Tottenham need to trust their youngsters to replace Son?

As much as Tottenham would like to sign a ready-made replacement for Son, there is a strong case for trusting one of their many top teenage talents.

Mikey Moore is one of the most exciting players in Europe for his age group and has already been involved in the first team.

Odobert is another very talented winger and even at 19, he’s already shown the qualities to be a top player in the future.

Finally, Yang min-Hyeok is due to arrive from Gangwon FC in January, a player who has been tipped to become Sonny’s successor in both South Korea and North London.
