Johan Lange came so close to making a terrible £69m error at Tottenham

Last summer, Tottenham Hotspur pushed hard to sign Savinho for £69 million, and that could have been a massive error given his performances this season.

Savinho was hauled off at half-time during Manchester City’s 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League, as the Brazilian’s struggles continued.

The Premier League second-placed team will surely be ruing their decision to turn down a substantial amount of money for the 21-year-old last summer, given how poor he has been.

Spurs could really do with another attacking option right now, but even in their situation, paying £69 million for a player like Savinho would have been awful.

Tottenham signing Savinho for £69m would have been catastrophic

Tottenham were prepared to pay £69m to sign Savinho from Manchester City, which would have been catastrophic, and is another reason why the recruitment needs a dramatic overhaul.

Spurs pushed really hard to sign Savinho last summer, only for City to block the move, given his potential.

City wanted to avoid another Cole Palmer situation, but right now, the winger is constantly in and out of the team under Pep Guardiola.

Away at the Santiago Bernabeu, Guardiola opted to take Savinho off at the interval as the Brazilian struggled to make an impact.

He failed to complete a single dribble, had just 28 touches, lost possession 11 times, and completed just 11 passes in 45 minutes.

Savinho has started just nine times in the Premier League and Champions League for City and has still failed to find his best role in the team.

Guardiola keeps switching him between the right wing and the left wing, with the signing of Antoine Semenyo further limiting his minutes.

Savinho’s hopes of going to the 2026 World Cup are continuing to diminish each week, and his latest display will not have done him any favours.

Spurs’ transfer plans are completely up in the air right now, with relegation looming over them, but they cannot return for Savinho at any cost.
