I was sold by Ange Postecoglou, but now Tottenham need a player just like me

One of the players who Ange Postecoglou sold over the summer is starting to really shine at his new club and showing Tottenham Hotspur what they are missing.

The North London club will reflect on the last summer’s transfer window as ultimately a disappointment with Dominic Solanke the only new addition to have made an impact. Meanwhile, Spurs offloaded 15 players with six of those players heading out on loan.

One of those who left on a permanent deal is now really starting to flourish at the club he joined in the summer and proving to be exactly the type of character Postecoglou’s squad is missing.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg impressing in Ligue 1

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is flying in Ligue 1 with Marseille with the Dane making quite an impression at the Stade Vélodrome. French journalist Matt Spiro was full of praise for the 29-year-old and has been far more impressed by him than what he was expecting.

Sprio wrote on X: “Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is absolutely bossing it at Marseille this season. He’s a far better player – and leader – than I realised.” Tottenham supporters will be reeling at those quotes with a lack of leadership in their current squad currently being questioned.

The term ‘Spursy’ has stuck around partly because the North London club have rarely had players who were willing to step up and defend the club. Hojbjerg proved to be a leader in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, for one reason or another he struggled to truly influence the dressing room.

Postecoglou is also missing a number six midfielder with Rodrigo Bentancur suspended and Yves Bissouma struggling to find any sort of form. He was far from the best player at Tottenham but his presence in the squad would certainly be a welcomed one given the current situation at the club.

Admittedly, the relationship between Tottenham and Hojbjerg needed to come to a close in the summer and the change of environment will likely have helped him to recapture his best form.

Do Tottenham have a leadership issue?

During these tricky periods, it’s tough seeing the leaders in this Tottenham squad shying away when they are needed the most. There have to be big question marks over Heung-min Son and James Maddison as captain and vice-captain as to whether they are doing enough to demand better from their teammates.

On Monday evening, it was great to see Cristian Romero attempting to address the real issue at the club – Daniel Levy and ENIC. In quite a statement by the vice-captain, he criticised the investments the club had made in the squad in comparison to their top six rivals.

It would be nice to see Romero show such leadership on the pitch too, but for now, calling out the owners like that shows he does care about the state of the club, making a nice change.
