Why Ange Postecoglou was fuming with what the media were saying after Tottenham’s draw vs Fulham

Ange Postecoglou was forced to make a very clear point to the media in his press conference after Tottenham Hotspur’s draw with Fulham.

Spurs limped to a 1-1 draw at home to 10-man Fulham as injuries took their toll on Postecoglou’s squad who looked well off the pace. The Lilywhites were sluggish for 90 minutes as they failed to win for a fifth time this season following a Europa League midweek match.

The Lilywhites’ manager was missing six starters against Fulham and he was not happy with how the media have treated their latest injury crisis. There was no Dominic Solanke, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Rodrigo Bentancur and Guglielmo Vicario, meanwhile, Dejan Kulusevski was only fit enough for the bench.

Postecoglou unhappy with the media’s treatment of Tottenham’s injuries

Ange Postecoglou has bemoaned the double standards in the media regarding Tottenham’s latest injury crisis. The Spurs boss claims that whilst some clubs will receive sympathy for missing one or two players, when the North London club were without several key players, including both centre-backs, they are expected to crack on as usual.

The 59-year-old says the players who are fit deserve massive credit for just getting on with it and not wanting him to make excuses for them after they dropped more points.

Postecoglou said in his press conference after the draw with Fulham: “I guess people are looking for easy targets but if people don’t understand what we are dealing with at the moment and how the players are coping with it, I think it’s fairly self-evident.

“There aren’t too many teams in the league with both their centre backs out, I’ve seen so much violin playing over one centre-back out, but we’re supposed to get on with it. But the beauty of it is that these boys are and I love that, I love the character they are showing, the fact they aren’t seeking excuses or wanting me to make allowances for it. But I need to acknowledge the massive effort that these guys are putting in.”

How bad is Tottenham’s latest injury crisis?

The good news is that Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski should both be fully fit to start against Bournemouth on Thursday. Solanke was missing against Fulham due to illness and Kulusevski was rested on the bench.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are both getting closer to making their returns, however, neither have returned to first-team training yet. Romero is closer than Van de Ven and the latter has started training outdoors with a ball.

Elsewhere, Mikey Moore, Richarlison, Wilson Odobert and Guglielmo Vicario are all expected to return in the New Year.
