Tottenham Hotspur forward Timo Werner has admitted Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have impressed him in training.

The German forward joined in the January transfer window on a short-term loan until the end of the season.

And it seems he is going up against some strong opposition in training at Hotspur Way.

Werner hails Spurs duo

Timo Werner’s arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium may have casted a few questions from the Tottenham fans.

His time at Chelsea was not the biggest success story as his individual record in front of goal may have left a lot to be desired.

But he is beginning to prove a valuable asset to Ange Postecoglou’s side having provided two goals and two assists already.

Perhaps the strength of competition in training is benefitting him. Speaking to the Premier League’s YouTube channel, Werner hailed Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero in training.

When asked who the toughest teammate to train against is, he said: “Micky is very fast. Cuti [Romero] is very aggressive, but I think probably Cuti because he likes to tackle and he’s very good at what he’s doing.”

Tottenham’s new look defence

The north London club have certainly not had a brilliant defensive record this season with Sunday’s win at Aston Villa their first clean sheet of the year.

However, there are a lot of positive signs that Postecoglou is building a strong backline for years to come.

Romero and Van de Ven have already formed a formidable partnership which has seen Radu Dragusin struggle for minutes since arriving.

With the Dutchman expected to miss Saturday’s trip to Fulham, it will provide the Romanian an opportunity to prove his worth.

Although clean sheets have been an issue, this new look Spurs defence has conceded the fourth-fewest (39) goals in the league this season.

And perhaps coming up against this level of defender on a daily basis in training is helping to get the best out of Werner.

The German is only being given half a season to show Spurs what he can do and he’s certainly made a bright start in his opening seven appearances.
