Tottenham journalist reveals the likelihood of Spurs terminating Timo Werner’s loan with a new winger joining in January

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been discussing the possibility of Timo Werner’s loan spell at the club being terminated in January.

The German has been quite disappointing in North London with the forward still unable to recapture the form that saw him earn a £44 million move to Chelsea in 2020.

Yang Min-hyeok is also expected to arrive in December with the 18-year-old adding to Ange Postecoglou’s wide options for the rest of the season as of January 1.

Yang is being touted by fans as Werner’s replacement, however, Alasdair Gold has been discussing the possibility of the winger returning to Germany earlier than planned.

Tottenham unlikely to terminate Timo Werner’s loan

Gold told his YouTube channel that Werner’s loan is not expected to be terminated in January as RB Leipzig are likely to be the club with the power to end his spell in North London. It’s also unlikely that Tottenham will want to lose the 28-year-old as their squad is thin as it is and sorting a replacement would be tricky.

Gold said on YouTube: “I know some of the fanbase have been calling for Werner’s deal to be cut short in January, that’s not quite as easy as it seems. If Spurs did want to do that, often the option lies with the club that have loaned him out, so Leipzig in this case.

“I also kind of feel like you’ve got Werner there, I don’t think you let go of him and then bring someone else in, it’s also a case that you need the numbers. Timo Werner has certainly got his faults, but when he does what he’s meant to, he can be quite a useful addition to the squad.”

What is Tottenham’s plan for Yang Min-hyeok?

Yang Min-hyeok will officially become a Tottenham player on January 1 although he is due to arrive in London in mid-December to start settling into life in a new country. The winger will not be allowed to play or train with Spurs until his contract with the North London club commences at the start of 2025.

“Yang Min-hyeok arrives next month to start settling into life in England, he’s got one more game after the international break in the K-League,” Gold added.

“He will come over to England, start getting settled, then January 1 is when his contract will kick in with Spurs and then he can start training. He must be able to use Hotspur Way as a gym, but I don’t think legally he will be able to train with the team as he wouldn’t be their player.

“Spurs have got to be careful with him, I don’t think anyone is looking at and thinking they’re just going to throw this 18-year-old, from the Korean league into a much higher, faster, physical league straight away. He will definitely be involved with the first team squad, but I imagine they’ll get him into training in those early weeks in January and get him used to things.”
