Daniel Levy oversaw a vast number of managers during his time in charge of Tottenham, and Martin Jol has now been discussing his former employer after the decision for him to leave the club.

The former chairman sent shockwaves through the Spurs fanbase when it was revealed that he was stepping down from his role after 25 years in charge in North London.

Since the decision was made, plenty have had their say on whether this will end up being a good thing for Spurs. It has been said that other Premier League clubs were fed up of dealing with Levy due to his reputation as being a tough negotiator.

In fact, a lot of the praise that the Englishman has received has been as a result of his work off the pitch, lifting the profile of the football club to now be seen amongst the biggest in Europe.

One of the most popular managers to work under him was Martin Jol, who was in charge at White Hart Lane between 2004 and 2007.

The Dutchman has spoken to Football London about his experience working with Levy, and he believes the recruitment staff at the club let him down during his tenure.

He said: “He’s commercially unbelievable, but 80% of his time, his recruitment staff were terrible. That is what I think, because people keep on criticising him about not spending money but I think they spent £700million or so over the last four or five years.

“The amazing thing is, how can you spend let’s say £700million, and there’s not one player in this squad who can go to Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea. I mean [Mohammed] Kudus went from Ajax, not to Chelsea, not to Man City, he went to West Ham, and of course he’s very talented, but he’s not better than [Dejan] Kulusevski, 100% not, but I know him from Ajax very well, he’s so talented.

“But I mean, he wouldn’t go to Chelsea or Man City or Man United or Liverpool. You see Liverpool, they want it, they buy it. But I mean Richarlison wouldn’t go to Arsenal or Chelsea or whatever, all these players. How many players are there in the Spurs team now, who would be bought by one of the big four or five?

“[Cristian] Romero could go anywhere but you feel like if he plays for a while at his top level, he will get injured. Romero is a good, decent defender, but I will tell you one thing, the guy they sent to Hamburg now – Luka Vuskovic – will be better.”

Martin Jol’s record at Tottenham

Despite not winning a trophy in his time at Spurs, many believe Jol’s style of football laid the blueprint for some of the more successful managers in the club’s modern history.

The club made the decision in 2007 to replace the Dutchman with Juande Ramos, however he was sacked within just 12 months after winning just 19 of his 54 games in charge.

Jol would go on to work for Hamburg and Ajax before making a return to the Premier League with a spell in charge of Fulham.
