Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven was wanted by Ajax before he made the move to north London.
The Netherlands international has been a hit at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after signing last summer.
And it appears the Lilywhites may have faced some competition to get their hands on Micky van de Ven in the summer.
Ajax wanted Van de Ven
According to Ajax’s former boss Alfred Schreuder, the Eredivisie side were very keen to bring in the 22-year-old.
However, speakng to Voetbalzone, he revealed the Dutchman was too expensive of an option for Ajax to pursue.
Van de Ven joined Ange Postecoglou’s side in the summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £43m in total.
A deal which proved too costly for the Dutch giants, as Schreuder said: “Other options were not available to us at the time. For example, we were interested in Micky van de Ven, but he turned out to be too expensive.”
Huge signing for Spurs
Although he suffered a serious hamstring injury, Van de Ven has proven to be one of Postecoglou’s most important players this season.
But he has already put that injury behind him as he has since been clocked as the Premier League’s fastest player in the history of the league.
And it has been testament to how quickly the 22-year-old has settled to the league that Radu Dragusin has been unable to earn a start.
The Romanian defender’s own mother has had to call for patience over her son’s lack of game time due to Van de Ven’s displays.
Alongside Cristian Romero, Van de Ven looks like a real key figure in the Tottenham backline for years to come.
With the Dutchman on a believed £50k-per-week salary, perhaps Daniel Levy will be keen to make him the latest player to be handed an improved deal.
