Timo Werner netted his first goal of the season and what a time to get it as the German helped fire Tottenham Hotspur past Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

Goals from Werner and Pape Matar Sarr helped Spurs to secure a major win over Pep Guardiola’s side and set up a quarter-final tie at home to Manchester United.

Ange Postecoglou’s men produced a wonderful first-half performance as they raced into a 2-0 lead after just 25 minutes. Matheus Nunes pegged them back just before the break, but in the second 45, Spurs managed to see out the win and reach the last eight.

Many Spurs supporters were a bit frustrated to see Werner starting considering the poor season he has had so far, however, they quickly got behind the forward as he opened the scoring after just five minutes. After the game, the 27-year-old sent a message to the Tottenham faithful after firing them into the next round.

Timo Werner’s message to Tottenham fans

Werner has thanked Tottenham fans for the support he received for his display against Man City as he marked a top performance with a goal. The former Chelsea star did miss some good opportunities to put the game to bed, but his work rate and general play proved a handful for the Premier League champions.

The home support acknowledge his efforts against City and gave him a superb reaction when he was forced off with a niggle and also for his goal.

Speaking about how much the goal meant to him against City and the crowd’s reaction, Werner told SpursOfficial: “A lot, I think especially with how the crowd reacted, I think it was more, ‘We saw he would do it one day’ and finally I did it. Now the hard work at the end brought success and I have to continue with that.”

The Lilywhites’ supporters will certainly love these quotes from a man who has been struggling for confidence but has always shown he can be a top player.

Will Heung-min Son replace Timo Werner vs Aston Villa?

Tottenham will be hoping that Heung-min Son will be fully fit to face Aston Villa on November 3 as he recovers from a small injury setback. Son came back into the team against West Ham United and even scored on his return, but he has since missed the next three matches.

Now, Postecoglou will be keen for the South Korean to return to the side with a massive Premier League clash up next. Meanwhile, he looks to have just lost Micky van de Ven to a nasty-looking hamstring injury.

The Australian manager will also need to assess the fitness of Romero, who came off as a precaution, and Solanke, who looked shattered at full-time.

Tottenham’s predicted team vs Aston Villa: Vicario; Udogie, Dragusin, Romero, Porro; Bissouma, Sarr, Kulusevski; Son, Johnson, Richarlison.
