Paul Robinson says VAR made a big mistake during Tottenham vs Leeds United

Another weekend of Premier League football has seen VAR take centre-stage with Tottenham left feeling hard done by.

Spurs were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United, despite taking the lead through a Mathys Tel goal.

However, a Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty salvaged a point for Leeds, with the hot talking point over referee Jarred Gillett’s performance.

How are we not getting these decisions? 😡

Spurs still have not been awarded a penalty this season… 😳

Gillett chose not to award James Maddison a penalty in stoppage time, with VAR also backing up the on-field decision.

Replays seemed to show Lukas Nmecha toe-poking the ball away from Maddison, although the contact was minimal at best from some of the angles.

Naturally, this has proved a talking point from the game, and Paul Robinson has now had his say on this huge Tottenham call.

Paul Robinson thinks Tottenham should have had a penalty

Robinson was covering the game for Premier League Productions as a former player who turned out for both clubs.

After the game, the decision proved the hot talking point and the ex-England goalkeeper was in no doubt over whether Tottenham were hard done by.

He said: “”No. Nailed on penalty. I mean Maddison made such a difference when he came on.

“But I think Nmecha will say that he got a slight touch on the ball. But when you watch the ball, it’s not like Nmecha has kicked the ball out for a corner kick and the ball’s out of play and Maddison’s not getting it.

“Regardless of whether he’s got a touch on the ball, that football’s still in play and he’s stopped Maddison getting it. It’s a penalty.”

Tottenham are now two points clear of West Ham with two games left to play.

Spurs are still in control of their own destiny, but having not won for so long away at Chelsea, that is a small cause for concern.

Due to Chelsea’s inclusion in the FA Cup Final, Tottenham have to wait a week to play that game too, and by that point, a win for West Ham at Chelsea would place them back in the bottom three.

The pressure is cranking up for both Tottenham and West Ham and if the club does get relegated, Spurs will have every right to feel aggrieved at this decision not given by Gillett on the night.
