Tottenham Hotspur have had an incredibly mixed season so far, delivering some fantastic displays and results with some real horror shows.

Spurs have shown they can not only beat, but absolutely destroy anyone on their day, including the likes of Manchester United and Aston Villa.

However, Tottenham have also lost games that they were heavy favourites to win, with the recent defeat to Ipswich Town proving a particularly bitter pill to swallow.

Spurs are certainly getting people talking this season, with BBC Sport pundit Pat Nevin one of the latest to give his thoughts on the club and on Ange Postecoglou.

Pat Nevin says Tottenham are ‘well placed’ to make top four

In the latest BBC Football Extra email newsletter, Nevin was asked by a fan: “Spurs are 10th but would have been third had they won at home v Ipswich. Which is nearer the ’truth’ of where they are?”

In response, the former Chelsea and Scotland ace backed Tottenham to “make it” into the Premier League’s top four by the end of the season.

Nevin, however, acknowledged that Spurs’ “unpredictable” style of play will lead to “ups and downs” throughout the season.

At the same time, he said he loves Postecoglou’s “honest attitude” and enjoys how Tottenham have become a team of entertainers.

“Great question and it does come down to the fact that there are 11 teams grouped together, each of whom could end up third or fourth,” said Nevin.

“In short, it is too early to know but I suspect Spurs are as well placed as most with their improvement under Ange Postecoglou to make it by the end of the season.

“The problem with Spurs is also their basic premise, their style is unpredictable and there will be ups and downs with such a brave/naive (take your own spin here) style.

“I reckon there is still good reason to stick with Ange, but then I’m biased because I like how they entertain most of the time, and I love his honest attitude.

“I suspect most Spurs fans have enjoyed much of the journey so far, particularly as previous coaches have provided much less entertainment.”

Ange Postecoglou ‘isn’t going to compromise’

Earlier this week, Premier League legend Mark Schwarzer said Postecoglou simply won’t compromise on his swashbuckling style of play.

“Fans and pundits argue that while it’s exciting to watch, there has to be a balance – but that’s where Ange just isn’t going to compromise,” Schwarzer wrote on Optus Sport.

“He will always persevere with the style of football his teams have always played, but the difference with Spurs is his previous teams have been far better (in terms of) discipline and have defended far better.

“So, yes, the tactics can be pointed at but I actually think it’s the players who are letting him down right now, rather than the other way around.

“Tottenham and the way they want to play are limited by their own numbers. To play the style of football that Ange wants to play, they’ve got to have a bit more strength in depth and they don’t have that at the moment.”
